So This Is How It Ends Then
CW: This blog contains my belief of what is coming down the track regarding climate change and the fate of human society as we know it. If you are someone who has negative thoughts, especially on catastrophising, on this topic, you may want to stop reading now.
This week (on Thursday 5th October), the Copernicus Climate Change service announced that September 2023 had on a global basis broken the all-time monthly temperature record - not by a small margin, but by 0.5C (0.9F). That is after both July 2023 and August 2023 had broken their monthly records by 0.3C (0.5F). That should be effectively impossible in a non-influenced climate statistically. Yet it happened. And you should be thinking whether as seems clear, we've already gone past a 'tipping point', and the system has been irretrievably broken.
And you almost certainly didn't hear about any of it. That is deliberate and by design.
Talk TV's James Max asked on his eponymous show on Friday 6th, why it was that only the Guardian reporting on its front page about the terrifying September global temperatures.
The answer to the question is obvious - distraction.
The media are part of the sole group who benefits from the system staying as it is - the ruling class.
They don't want you to stop, think, realise and accept what is coming from climate change, and what is really needed if we want to have any society that looks somewhat like today in the coming decades, because you might then start organising to try and overthrow their position, when it's the only way you can stop it. Because both the media and an even bigger problem, the 'politicians', have all the control of what happens - and always in service of the wealthy - and they do not want their position and the benefit from it to go away from them.
Think about the talking points our society is 'split' on. Migration, both 'legal' and 'illegal'. Political and media attacks against minority groups. Poverty, wealth inequality and a worsening quality of life. Wars, both between states and within. Increased spending by states on military and police. Even climate change itself. The established media, whether conservative or liberal, treat them as individually caused issues, when they are all connected back to one thing - capitalism.
But for the ruling class, the capitalist project must always continue, no matter what it causes or destroys, or who it kills.
The one caller I heard him take - I did not bother listening to more as this channel with the audience it's cultivating will never look at the problem like I lay out here - put to him and their audience that the only way to 'fix it' was by 'cutting the population in half'. This is not only false, but worryingly false. But it is now being promoted by status quo politicians, corporations and the media because it pushes the root cause from the public eye. The system stays, unaffected, their wealth and status from their long ago captured position unthreatened. And the regular joes are told that nothing 'needs to change' for them, as they are left to be the ones to face the damage the few have caused and inflicted on them.
But even if we Thanos-snapped 50% of people out of existence, nothing would be solved. Because you would still have all the real causes of climate change in place - fossil fuel burning, rampant consumerism promoted by the capitalist class (you'd have a pretty grim life not taking part in it), and the imperative this economic system requires of never-ending 'growth' and increasing corporate 'profits' for the 'sake of the economy'. Without the hierarchies being defenestrated, nothing will ever be fixed. We have the resources to feed everyone already and provide a good quality of life for all. But our masters have a different motive in mind.
Fossil fuels are an inherent part of the capitalist system - 2024 Republican presidential nominee Vivek Ramaswamy has said as much in his campaign, including most notably at the first primary debate, calling them a "requirement for human prosperity". And you might tell me that Ramaswamy has no chance at being the next US president, and as it stands you'd be right. But he could easily be put in a energy cabinet post in a second Donald Trump presidency.
And even if not, you should also be concerned whoever is in power in the Republican Party after 2024, when some of the most ghoulish right-wing lobby groups and think tanks put out their 'Project 2025' plan to rip up and remodel the whole existence of the US state to a world that very few people want - but is a dream for both fundamentalists and the wealthy, in an unregulated, ultra-capitalist hellscape for the 99%. Included in that is ending any mitigation on climate change, and to basically treat it as either non-existent or nothing to worry about.
And you may say that is only America. But we know that the current Conservative Party are closely lock-stop with the same think tanks and lobbying groups, and after both the National Conservatism Conference and most recently the Conservative Party Conference in Manchester, they are becoming imperceptible in tone and rhetoric to the GOP. And if that isn't enough evidence for you, well Florida Governor Ron DeSantis spelled it out in a front page interview for the British Right's newspaper-of-record, The Sunday Telegraph, back in April.
So we will all sit idly by as the world collapses in on our hubris. And it's being allowed by the status quo forces, who have known for at least five decades what is going to happen - but just couldn't resist the money and power the system brought them, so they both lied and pushed the blame for their actions on to you and me, the 'consumer', who has no real power to dictate what these massive corporations do.
And TalkTV themselves are a major player in that, with its numerous hosts and pundits to this day pumping out climate change denial and minimising, as well as the virtues of our 'incredible' economic model we have today, that 'drives up quality of lives around the world'. Yet somehow the poorest remain the poorest, and the wealthiest remain the wealthiest - both individuals and nations.
In fact, I have no doubt that - unless he completely ignores it - Toby Young will no doubt be coming along soon writing on his website to tell us that this heat anomaly is actually all nothing to see, because it was down to the 'Cultural Marxist One World Government' have hired a fleet of jets to hover around all the official weather sites day and night.
On that same Thursday night the climate report came out, our two right-wing 'news' channels were at the same time debating how the media and politicians were actually not promoting anti-trans hate (another 'enemy within' distraction for the benefit of the structural powers) on a daily basis, and any rise in trans hate crimes was 'down to misgendering' on one side, while on the other, we had someone denying that climate change was any real thing on one side of their 'debate', and the other that it was all down to 'overpopulation'.
That is ecofascism. And is being embraced by those who can't give up their power from this system. Yet nothing will change, because the system demands what we have today to always exist.
And so expecting both media and politics to ever fix these things is foolish. No matter what 'side of the debate' they are purportedly on. Expecting some centrist Labour Party who are currently chasing every Tory voter on social rights and economic fundamentalism, rather than to us on the Left, is nothing more than hopium. They have no interest to lose out on making changes - even more when they only exist to serve the capitalist class and endeavour.
So they will continue to distract and attack others. And by attack, they will also use those state arms of violence - the police and military - to retain 'order', no matter how clear the pain being done to us gets. Oh, and they are adding more money and resources to them at the same time. It's not a coincidence.
The only way to 'save us' now, is by us. We need a massive consciousness shift to first recognise what is going on right now, and why and when we are being distracted by propaganda on matters that are only something to 'worry about' when it's needed by those in power to retain their power, and disappear once it isn't. They are not organically being driven from the ground up.
Mass migration, poverty, attacks on minorities, war and growing expenditure of police and military - they are all connected. Because those in power know the economic and environmental systems are collapsing. But they're hoping you don't notice for long enough that they can get out away from the scene with the bag they can get from perpetuating this gross socioeconomic world they've created for themselves to always win at, whilst the 99% are designed to always lose, due to their grandness.
Our only hope left is through mass community-led organising around shared humanity, and a collectivist, anti-capitalist world, where resources aren't distributed and created based on the amount of profit the corporate oligarch can get from it, but from need for all - across borders.
If we don't do it, and soon, we're fucked. The climate is going only one way now. Because those in power do not care about it or us, or ever will as, as it stands, it will come to their door last.
